The session presented a global overview of harm reduction, highlighting wide variation in service coverage and access across regions, particularly between high‑income and low‑ and middle‑income countries. It showcased a range of innovations in harm reduction, including flexible and community‑led needle and syringe programme models, the use of low dead space syringes, supervised consumption rooms, drug checking services, and emerging innovations in opioid agonist therapy. Drawing on a strong and growing evidence base, the session demonstrated that high‑coverage, integrated harm reduction interventions are highly effective in reducing HIV and hepatitis C transmission and improving broader health outcomes, reinforcing the importance of scaling up comprehensive, evidence‑based harm reduction approaches globally.
